The Official History of Sheffield Wednesday Womens FC

SWWFC were formed at the Star Inn pub in 1971 following a charity match between men and women at the pub. The team was originally called Star Ladies. Shortly afterwards the side joined the Sheffield Ladies League. When this league was disbanded they joined the Nottinghamshire Ladies League which was later renamed the East Midlands Ladies League.

In 1983 they became members of the Women's Premier League. They took the name Sheffield Wednesday in 1985 and then subsequently when the FA created the AXA FA Women's League Sheffield Wednesday Ladies became founder members and have continued in this league until 2005 when they were relegated to the Women’s Northern Combination League where they spent 2 seasons.

Christine McCann guided the Owls back to the top flight as champions of the Northern Combination in 2007 as they returned to Premier League football for the 2007/2008 season. McCann handed the reigns to senior coach Daniel Duke for their Premier League return and he and his staff successfully guided them to a respectable 6th place finish in their 1st year back in the top flight. The Owls have just completed their 2nd season back competing against the countries cream of women’s football and after a tough season they retained the status as one of the best teams in the county.

In 2009 Duke was promoted to Director of Football at the club and Andy Burgess was brought in as 1st team manager but due to poor results and other commitments he left the club 8 months later and was replaced by Liam Kelly to the end of the season but couldn’t help save the club from relegation from the Northern Premier League.

June 2010 saw the appointment of Adam Smallman as the clubs new manager and the branding of “new wednesday” begin as they strived to return to the FA Northern Premier League at the first opportunity.
