If a new manager ever wanted a result and a performance in his first game this was it, as the Owls finally got to kick off their County Cup campaign with a 17-0 win over Beighton Magpies.
The Owls started brightly, playing some pure attacking football and went 1-0 up through Rachel Skeemer after 10 minutes slotting away with composure in the 6-yard box. Centre forward Tanya Rich came close in the following minutes, but it was left to debutant Kerry Smith to slot away the Owls second on 19 minutes and she completed her brace on the 24th minute with a well taken header. Wednesday went 4-0 up after Rachel Skeemer scored her second of the game with a header from a corner.
Wednesday went in at half - time in control, but still looking for more.
The team continued to press and some of the football played was a pleasure to watch. The Owls went further in front with Rachel Skeemer scoring her well deserved hat trick on the 48th minute, and then the Owls started playing at a different level in terms of tempo and quality. On the 56th minute Beth Gingell let rip from just outside the area to put the Owls 6-0 up. Substitute Emily Scott, used her skill and flare to open up her scoring account on the 62nd minute putting the ball away from 6-yards. Then Wednesday went on the rampage scoring 4 times in the following 10 minutes with goals from Rich, Scott, and Smith getting a well deserved hat – trick, this was then topped off with a superb solo goal from Lisa Sandys. Then in the final 15 mins the result was complete with more goals from Rich, also getting a hat-trick, Scott, Lee with a superb effort from long range, a Hobson penalty and Rachel Skeemer finishing off the scoring with the 17th goal late into injury time.
Speaking after the game new Manager Liam Kelly was pleased with the result but already urging his squad to move forward "This result was for every player, every staff member and more importantly Sheffield Wednesday. From start to finish the players showed great professionalism, attitude, quality, winning mentality and desire. The foundations have been laid now for the rest of our season, and the pleasing thing long term is we now realise this is not about just 11 players, it's about a group, a family of people who are happy in their work and all aiming towards the same aims. We need to continue to get closer, show respect for each and every member of our family. Footballs about today and tomorrow, so from tomorrow, the positives are remembered, the short comings are improved and we move forward to next week with added quality. I just want to finish by telling the players we are proud of every single one of them and there a credit to this great football club"
