Owls Work Hard For The Points
Sheffield Wednesday got their 2010 League Campaign off to a great start with a 2-1 victory against Preston North End.

The Owls started brightly with forward Tanya Rich putting them into a 1-0 lead early into the 1st half. Wednesday continued to attack with great desire and quality, mainly through winger Hollie Barker, proving her worth as she gave the Preston left back a torrid time in the opening 15 minutes, but Wednesday couldn’t add to their account as they continued to press the Preston goal. Heading towards half-time it looked like Wednesday would go in one goal in front, until in the dying minutes Preston pulled a goal back.

In form Tanya Rich scored her second of the game midway through the second half when she found herself the half of a yard needed to lob the ball over the keeper, and even 2 Preston players back tracking could not stop the ball crossing the line, to what seemed to take an age to go in.

Preston continued to press, and some fantastic team work in the final 10 minutes stopped Preston taking a anything from this game.

Next up for Wednesday is a 'six pointer' to Curzon Aston this Sunday, in which a victory will see the Owls move out of the bottom two.

Wednesday Manager Liam Kelly was full of praise for his side "The girls deserved this, not just for the performance and work ethic today, but for the last 3 weeks, the training programme has been hit and miss due to the weather, but the players have kept themselves in shape, worked hard when we have trained, their newly found professional attitudes around the camp and the fact that everyone has come together, whether in the first 11 or on the bench.

The players now have that winning mentality and know what it takes to win, and 3 wins in as many weeks’ just puts a smile on everyone faces, and with the likes of Barker, Sherwood, Severns, Maslin and Rich all having an illness in the past week but playing twice, notably Barker even on her last legs, just shows what it means to them to play for this great club, but then again that’s the mentality of everyone at the moment"
